When pulled upright this card seems to be a reminder that everything is made up of both bad and good and it is a cycle we can’t control (much like the seasons). This cycle is something everyone must deal with, the rich and the poor. When you are doing good in life enjoy it to the fullest as it will not last forever. When things are bad, stick through it because things will turn around eventually. Greater forces than those of humans are at work here.
When pulled in reverse this card means that luck has not been on your side. When this card shows up you must remember that your misfortune is not your fault but is due to external forces that you cannot control. Hold on to the knowledge that the wheel is always turning so things will work out eventually. Make sure you aren’t clinging to the illusion of control. The whole purpose for your misfortune right now could be to teach you to let go and release. When you don’t let go it can bring more suffering, as you may be blaming yourself for things out of your control. When we learn to let go we learn to accept and forgive ourselves which can set the wheel turning again to better and greater things.
Here is a tarot spread that focuses on the Wheel of Fortune. It is great for finding where you are in a cycle. First take the wheel of fortune card out of the deck and meditate on it while thinking about the changes happening in your life. Then shuffle and pull the cards as you see fit.
Card 1: This represents you, sitting in the middle of the wheel; whether you are there calmly and centered, or if you’re fighting this.
Card 2: This point in the cycle represents that which is sleeping or fallow or dead, the quiet winter and dark rich earth from which seeds sprout. It may not look like anything’s going on, but this place is necessary and needed; it is the rest from which you will wake, renewed.
Card 3: This card represents what is coming to be; new things that are growing, spring.
Card 4: This is things that are at their height, the summer’s glory; something that you can be most successful with right now, an idea whose time is right.
Card 5: This card represents the things that are passing away, that are no longer needed, or that are dying now, the autumn.
Card 6: This is Dame Fortune Herself, turning the Wheel: the overall theme of Fate in your life right now.
With which card on the rim of the wheel does the card representing you have the most in common? With which card and position do you identify the strongest?
