Letting go Ritual

This weekend, as those of you know who follow me on twitter, I was going through a pretty nasty breakup. I am grateful to say that after reflecting on us, my partner has realized his rashness and we are going to work on the issues instead of just breaking up. Woohoo! But this weekend has really shown me how nasty and truly devastating a breakup really is. So I thought I would give you guys a little help on how to let go of something.

If you’ve watched friends, you’ve probably seen this ritual. This ritual is all about burning things to let them go. So whether you are going through a breakup; a death; trying to give up a habit; anything, get some photos; letters; or write down some feelings that have to do with what you’re letting go and burn it. Don’t be too specific. Let the universe really figure out what you need, just give the universe some guidelines. Also make sure you collect the things to burn when you in a good mindset and not super emotional. You don’t want to burn something that is actually important.

The new moon is the perfect time to set intentions. Because of this, the new moon is a great time to write a list of things you want to let go. Your list shouldn’t be you asking for things but rather should be affirmative statements. Date the list when you’re done and write “I accept these things into my life now or something better for the highest good and the good of all concerned.” This will ensure that what you are sending out won’t affect others negatively.

The burning should take 2 weeks later during the full moon, preferably outside. If you can’t do it outside, I would recommend doing it by an open window. While you are waiting for the full moon do some meditation and stop doing things that are making it hard to move one (if it is a breakup stop looking at your ex’s social media, stop going through pictures of your together, etc).

During the burning, start your fire if you’re outside and put everything in the fire one at a time and explain the significance of each piece as it burns. If you’re inside I would recommend putting everything into a cauldron, or whatever you have, one at a time while explaining the significance of each piece, and then light it all together. Regardless of your method while you are doing the burning chant “I release you, I am done.” You may start experiencing some emotions and that’s okay. Feel them but then move on.

Tarot Series~Major Arcana Card 15: The Devil

When pulled upright this card can mean you are experiencing feelings of entrapment, emptiness, and a lack of fulfilment in your life. It also means you are obsessed with materialism and despite trying to be less materialistic you can’t seem to get rid of the need/desire to live luxuriously. You may already be able to tell that that kind of lifestyle is leading you down a bad road but you for some reason have this feeling of not being able to control your actions or urges. Another reason for your feeling of entrapment and emptiness may be due to addiction (to substances or material objects).

When pulled in reverse this card can mean you have had your moment of self-realization and you’ve broken the chains of addiction and bad habits. Breaking these chains are not easy though so now is the time to really do a self assessment and list all the things they need to get rid of in their life. Once one does that it is then time to embark on the hard journey of self-improvement. 

Here is a tarot spread that focuses on the devil card. It is great to use when you are feeling stuck so you can help see what is holding you back. First I would take the devil card out of the deck and meditate on it focusing on what areas in your life you feel need improvment. Then shuffle the cards and pull them as you see fit.

Card 1: This card repesents the rut you are in that you can’t see out of, the old habit that is no longer serving you, your prejudices and biases.

Card 2: This card is the subconscious roots, why you are comfortable in this hole or why you are binding yourself. Can represent deep issues that need to be addressed, or depths not acknowledged, that are held back and need to be let out in some way. Also repression and fear.

Card 3: This card represents conscious manifestations, what this is doing to you on an everyday level, insecurities, anxieties, worry, or the happy face you put on things.

Card 4: This card puts it in perspective; it represents the bird’s eye view from above. This is an outside opinion, the overall picture.

Now pick card 5:

Card 5: This card shows how to free yourself from this, issues you need to get through, or advice you can apply to this situation. This is the way to loosen the chains.
