Tarot Series~ Minor Arcana: Knight of Swords

63951679f53b24efd6f0ad0e2898a5bd

When pulled upright this card represents someone who is so focused on a certain idea, that they become oblivious to any difficulties; conflicts; or consequences it brings us, as they try to achieve it. This card is about someone full of life and energy but they need to make sure they are balancing themselves out with a good dose of compassion and responsibility. The person this card represents, is someone who once they have set their mind to something there is no stopping them. While this can be a great trait as it shows ambition and dedication it can also have some downfalls. Some of the things this person might be willing to do to achieve their goal could have some very serious consequences. They are likely prone to move ahead without any preparation or foresight, which can put them in a dangerous (or at the very least unpleasant) situation.

When pulled in reverse this card is about someone who is extremely impatient, impulsive, and full of energy. However unlike the person the upright card represents this person has no direction, despite their abundance in energy. This causes a lot of rash decisions which can drag others down with them. This person likely has a lot of scattered thoughts and they don’t tend to take the time to go through them and organize them. It is quite likely that they are a disorganized person. When they do finally have something they want to achieve with all that energy they have they are likely very unprepared due to this lack of organization.

Here is a tarot spread to help you find some direction for all that energy you have. First I would take out the knight of swords and meditate on it thinking about your directionless energy that you have. Then shuffle and pull the cards using your preferred method.

Can you do Witchcraft with Tattoos?

So, I don’t know if you’ve noticed through pics or on youtube (if you follow me there) but I am a tattooed lady. I absolutely love tattoos and I actually just got two new ones last week while I was on vacation. I am actually planning on having a nature/wicca based arm sleeve. I know a lot of other Wiccans tend to enjoy tattoos (obviously not all, just making a generalization) so I thought you guys might enjoy talking about how we can make our tattoos magickal.

So when one gets a tattoo there is a good chance that what you’re getting on your body has some sort of meaning. It could be to honour a loved one, to remember a piece of your childhood, to show your love for a certain show/movie/book, etc. Well when doing a spell we do something similar. We give our spell an intent. Infusing a tattoo with magick is much of the same. You find a design you want and you infuse that design with your intent.

27073374_1576333662455257_4188636195681342_n

When it comes to what kind of things you may want to put on your body for magickal purposes there are tons of options. You could create a sigil and infuse it with your intent. Some examples of some intentions you may want to give to a tattoo sigil are protection, positivity, love, happiness, laughter, prosperity, etc. You could also get a tattoo that represents your dedication to the wicca path, a specific wiccan tradition, or even a particular deity. I know at some point I want to get a tattoo to dedicate to Gaia.

There are two main ways to go about getting these magickal tattoos. The first option, which is not one I am necessarily recommending as it a bit dangerous, is stick and poke tattoos. If you have a simple design you want to get, you could attempt to do it on your own. This is a great method if you want a more hands on approach to infusing the tattoo with your magickal intent. Make sure you have the proper equipment when you do this though. You can buy kits for this on amazon I believe. The 2nd method, which is what I personally would do, would be to get someone to create me a tattoo design. I then would take the time to focus on giving that design my intent and meditating with it. Then, when it is time to get the artist to tattoo me, I would try my hardest to meditate (or at the very least focus on my intent) while they do their work.

Love is Eternal ~ A Poem

Hi everyone! I am back from my short little hiatus and hopefully that will be the end of inconsistent posting for a while. We are going to finish the week off with this post and Friday’s post. Next week we will get back to videos as well. I thought I would ease back in to the routine with a poem I wrote. Not quite sure if I am any good at poetry as my sister is the only one I’ve ever shown my work to. Hopefully it’s at least alright. I wrote this poem for Yule of 2017 just like my sister did for Apollo (link here to read her poem). Mine however is dedicated to Gaia.

Love is Everlasting

You’re earth around me

You make up soil beneath me

Wet, brown between toes

Birds in all the trees

The animals walking earth

The plants in the ground

Your scent in the air

It is crisp and brings me life

You are all I breath

I feel your presence

Your energy surrounds me

Coursing through bodies

I feel the beating

Drumming I feel in my heart

Your heart against mine

We are one together

Two halves of a whole united

Love is eternal

That is all I have for today. I’d love to hear any of your pagan/wiccan themed poems or see any of your art related to the subject as well. Feel free to send them to wiccans_arent_wicked@hotmail.com and if you want I’ll even post them to the blog with any info of yours you want attached. Make sure you subscribe to me here and on twitter so you get notifications when I post and when I upload videos to youtube. Until next time, Blessed Be!

Birthday Celebrations with a Wiccan twist

fda3655eb95d0e5382cb502fa3c9ec85

Hi everyone! Tomorrow is my 21st birthday so I thought I might do a post on how to celebrate your birthday with a little bit of a Wiccan twist. Obviously the specifics will depend on the person and what time of year your birthday is.

Rituals

So there are definitely some rituals you can do for your birthday. You can do one as simple as making a wish as you blow out your candles on your cake or as in depth as a dedication ritual to the faith or to a specific deity.

Something that I think is really beautiful is the idea of dedicating yourself on your birthday. It is very symbolic of being reborn into your spiritual journey. How one does a dedication ritual is dependent on many things but firstly whether or not you’re in a coven or if you’re solitary. If you are in a coven you will likely have certain traditions for this sort of ritual. However if you are a solitary you will have a lot more options. I’m not one to follow a ritual word for word from the internet. I typically like to wing it myself and do whatever feels right. I do know that many people (especially those of you who are new to the path) like to have more specific instructions though so I will give a guideline as to how I would approach a self dedication and then leave a link or two to some as well.

When I do my self dedication ritual someday I envision myself being either in the forest or somewhere I can connect with all 4 elements. So for example camping in eyesight of a lake or ocean, with a bonfire, feeling the breeze against my skin. I would also do this at night as I feel a deep connection with the moon. I then would go on to talk to the universal energy source about what Wicca means to me and how it has affected my life. I then would talk about my desire to dedicate myself to the path. I would finish by thanking the universal energy source and then by meditating.

Here are some links to other dedication rituals to give you some more ideas.

Simple Wiccan Dedication Ritual

Witchcraft/Divination

So it’s your birthday (or someone you know’s birthday) and you want to add a little magick to the day. You can insert a little kitchen magick into their birthday cake ( click here for birthday magick ideas) or encourage them to make a wish on their birthday candles. Usually in Wicca we stay away from selfish magick but your birthday is all about you so if there is any magick (as long as it still harms none) that you want to do that may be more vain today is the day to do it.

Divination is also something you can do to celebrate your big day. Specifically what this near year as in store for you. There are tons of birthday tarot spreads on pinterest you can look at but I’ll leave two here for your leisure.

You can also do runes, scrying, tasseography, pendulum work, and any other divination you enjoy doing as well.

Gifts

If you’re the friend or family member of Wiccan and want to give them something related to their faith there are lots of options. For those of you who have the money to spend you could get them a new book about Wicca, you could get them something for their altar they’ve been talking about needing, you can give them a crystal you think they could benefit from, or help them stock up on their herbs. This year my partner got me a big cast iron cauldron, a lovely little book about the history and uses on cauldrons, and he got me incense to help heal the chakras. Don’t be afraid to ask the Wiccan in your life if there is anything they’ve wanted or needed for their faith.

Some of us though aren’t always in the spot to buy a gift. That’s totally okay, been there done that. You could go on a nature walk and see if you come across anything that is calling to be a gift. Maybe you find a feather, a pinecone, a beautiful stone, or a flower. Any of those things would make a beautiful gift. What I typically do when I am short on money is I will go to the dollarstore and get a little jar and then use materials I already have to make a jar spell. So I will think of something I want for my loved one (happiness for example) and I will look up all the different herbs, crystals, objects, etc that correspond with what I want to achieve and put it all in the container. If you want to see a post about jar spells let me know as I have made a few. You can also give someone a blessing. Example below from http://onespiritx.tripod.com/bless01.htm

May your spirit

soar gracefully

on the whispering breeze.

May your joy

run strong

as the deepest seas.

May your soul

reach out

to embrace the sky.

May your heart

guide you truly

as the years go by.

If you are gifted in anyway you can also use those gifts as a gift. So if you are great at a certain type of divination you could give them a reading. If you are trained in reiki you could give them a free session. You could offer to sage their home.

I hope you all enjoyed this today’s post and got some ideas for your own and for your loved ones’ birthdays. How do you celebrate your birthday? Let me know in the comments along with any other thoughts or questions you have for me. If you’re looking to give me a little gift for my big day you can always like, comment, subscribe and/or share my content (here on the blog, on twitter, or on my youtube. Light is Everlasting ~ A Poem

Yule of 2017, my sister, who we’ll tentatively call Rainbow Skylark, made a poem for Apollo. She presented this poem to him during a Yule ritual we did together. She wrote this when she was 12 years old. I think this poem is so beautiful and really wanted to share it with you all.

Light is Everlasting

You’re my Light

You spread your heat to keep me toasty

Heat, circles through my body

Humans, you give us warmth

Around the Earth you orbit

Sprinkles of light shine everywhere

Your touch in the sky

It gives me power to keep going

You are all that passes through me

I see the break of day

It connects us

Your heart facing mine

Together we bring courage

Separate at a time now put together as a full

Light, is everlasting

That is all for today’s post. I hope you enjoyed. I am thinking about making a section for poems and maybe even art dedications on the blog if anyone has any poems or art they want to email me at wiccans_arent_wicked@hotmail.com. Credit will obviously be given for any submissions. My sister reads my blog so if you have any comments (only pleasant ones please) about her poem or any other thoughts or questions leave them down in the comments below. Make sure you follow me here and on twitter to get notifications when I post and when I upload videos to youtube. Until next time, Blessed Be!

Wheel of the Year: Litha

So tomorrow is Litha/Midsummer/Summer Solstice so now is a better time than any to talk about what Litha is and what we do to celebrate!

So Litha is celebrated on the summer solstice of each year which is June 21st. This day is the opposite of Yule and celebrates the longest day of the year. On this day the sun god is at his peak and is at his strongest. The Goddess is very pregnant at this point which can be seen in our fields and gardens as crops are in the midst of growing. And while we are excited about the strength of the god and the pregnancy of the goddess we are sad because after this day the god will only become weaker until his death on Samhain.

Some ways to celebrate on this day are to light a bonfire in tribute of the sun god, place an offering in a body of water to encourage water supply to the thirsty crops, watch the litha sunrise and sunset, charge your crystals in the magickal energy of the sun, create a magick wand, leap the bonfire for luck and health in the coming year, wear a crown of flowers in your hair. Now is also a great time to try and see the fae. Keep an eye out especially around your garden. This is a traditional time to either dedicate yourself the god and goddess or to renew your vows to them.

Now is a good time to celebrate deities such as these:

Father Gods and Mother Goddesses, Pregnant Goddesses and Sun Deities. Particular emphasis might be placed on the Goddesses Aphrodite, Astarte, Freya, Hathor, Ishtar, Venus and other Goddesses who preside over love, passion and beauty. Other Litha deities include Athena, Artemis, Dana, Kali, Isis, Juno, Apollo, Dagda, Gwydion, Helios, Llew, Oak Holly King, Lugh, Ra, Sol, Zeus, Prometheus, Ares, Mother Earth, Father Sun, the fey, fairy folkand Thor.

http://www.ravenandcrone.com

And as I always say on any sabbat it is customary to perform a ritual (Midsummer/Litha Ritual), go for a nature walk, eat food in season, do divination and/or magick for healing, growth, empowerment, and love.

Thanks for reading! What are you going to do to celebrate this Litha? Let me know in the comments along with any other thoughts or questions you may have. Also don’t forget to follow me here and on twitter to get notifications when I post! I hope you have a lovely Litha! Until next time, Merry Meet and Blessed Be.

Traditional Universal Rituals

Lets talk about traditional rituals. Like in other religions Wiccan’s have universal rituals that they do for certain milestones in a person’s life. There are different rites for birth, marriage, death, etc.

When it comes to welcoming new life you can do a birth rite. This is the time when parents (possibly with other Wiccans) have a ritual to ask for the goddess of birth and motherhood to come in and watch over your pregnancy and your baby.

Then there is the naming ceremony (which can likely take place with the birth rite). This is the time where parents name their child in front of the god and goddess. You would also ask the god or goddess of your choice to give guidance to the child. You also introduce your child to the elements, deities, ancestors, and any other spirit you associate with and want in your child’s life. These entities and any person in the circle would be expected to gift the child with blessings or gifts that will assist the child when growing up.

When a child is around 13 (when a female starts her cycle or when a male starts growing facial hair) you can do a ritual where you introduce your child to the elements, deities, ancestors, etc as an adult (as in the olden days you would have been thought of as an adult). Before then a child wouldn’t have their own altar and wouldn’t be leading their own rituals/magickal workings. At age 13 though this is when a person would start branching off and gathering their own materials for their own altar.

Then we have birthday rituals. This can be as simple is blowing out a candle and making a wish or do a full blown ritual where you recommit yourself to deity.

Next is handfasting. This is a time where friends and family get together to join two people together as one. This can be a legally binding marriage if want it to be or it can also just be a personal binding. You can make a vow for any amount of time. For a year, a lifetime, or just for as long as you both love each other. Often times a couples arms are tied together by ropes to signify their union and they make vows to one another in front of their guests, including the elements, deities, ancestors, etc. Anyone can officiate if you aren’t making it legally binding. Some people will get a high priest(ess) or shaman to officiate. If you want a legally binding marriage you need to have someone qualified to do that to officiate.

We also have a ritual to celebrate the transition to croning. We are no longer maidens/youth or mothers/fathers. We are now crones who have lots of wisdom and knowledge. We are able to guide the youth and parents. This kind of ritual is more personal and is typically done on your own (or coven) with deity.

Our last big ritual is when one dies. When someone dies we take the time celebrate their life and to help heal the hearts of the living. In this ritual the living would ask the elements the deities the dead worked with, to help guide the loved one to whatever afterlife they believed in. They would also ask the ancestors to welcome the newly passed into their circle and to help them transition into this different type of existence. Each person would think of a good memory of the newly passed because that loved one will never truly be gone but simply just harder to reach.

All of these rituals are rituals of celebration, including the death/ages rites and aging and death are not thought of as coming to an end but rather getting ready for a new beginning.

Thank you for reading! Please leave any thoughts or questions in the comments. Merry Meet and Blessed Be!

All About Covens

First of all, what is a Coven?

A coven can be a group of Wiccans or just Witches. If a group of Wiccans, they would gather for every Sabbat and 1-2 times a month for esbats (Sabbats are days we celebrate the sun and esbats are nights we celebrate the moon) to do rituals and magick. If they are solely Witches they would gather likely on full moons and whenever else they deem fit to practice magick together. In this post though I will be talking of Wiccan covens.

Different covens practice different paths of Wicca so if you are going to join a coven it is very important that you find one that meets your beliefs. How you join a coven differs from coven to coven. In some covens you can inquire about joining, in others you have to wait to be invited. In a coven there are usually 1-2 leaders known as the High Priestess or the High Priest. The number of Wiccans in a coven is usually between 3 and 20.

There are pros and cons to working in a coven. Some pros are that you get support and companionship. As a solitary I can vouch in saying working alone can be quite lonely and isolating. Also, when in a coven you have people who you can teach you about the craft. When you are solitary you have to figure out everything for yourself. When you’re in a coven you can study to get higher degrees in the coven and eventually get the status of High Priest(ess). Lastly some people enjoy having a set schedule and a plan for how to learn. It gives them a routine and structure that they work well with.

Despite the pros there are some cons. Although some people love the structure, some people don’t. The coven will make decisions about meeting times and attendance that may not fit your schedule. Certain covens have expectations of it’s members that you may not be comfortable with. For examples how you dress in a meeting (dressed or skyclad). You will also be held accountable for keeping the laws of the tradition of the coven. If said laws are broken the coven can kick you out. If you leave your coven and start a coven of a new tradition you may have to start your training all over again. Lastly, in a coven you will be hanging out with a group of people. If you don’t like a member it’s going to be uncomfortable.

Training in a Coven

Every coven is different but in general this is usually how the process goes. So you’ve told a coven you’re interested, they invite you to attend an open ritual. When you go to the ritual you will get to check out the coven and they get to check you out. If you guys like each other and they decide they want you to join as a dedicant or a witch in training. Then someone will agree to be your teacher. As a dedicant you study the craft for a year and a day before you earn your first degree initiation and acceptance into the coven.

You will get a list of expectations that may include attendance and study requirements, promises to uphold the Wiccan Rede, and an oath to keep the coven a secret.

The coven will have a dedication ritual for you that essentially says you are committing yourself to the Wiccan path. After another year and a days study after your dedication, if the high Priest(ess) deems you ready you will be part of a ritual where you are reborn into the Wiccan path. You then will earn your First Degree Initiation, you gain the title of Priest or Priestess, and you’re officially a member of the coven. Then after another year and a day study from that ritual and the High Priest(ess) deems you ready you will earn your Second Degree Elevation and the title High Priest(ess). You are now qualified to start teaching, writing, and leading ritual. In some traditions you will be able to start your own coven. The last step is at least a year and a day after that ritual if the High Priest(ess) deems you ready you earn your Third Degree Elevation, and the official title of clergy, and the title of Lady or Lord. At this point you can break away from the mother coven, or hive off and form your own coven.

Priests, Priestesses, and Elders

Within a coven there is generally both a High Priestess and a High Priest. The High Priestess is seen as the Goddess incarnate and is the spiritual centre of the coven. The High Priest assists the High Priestess and is seen as the God incarnate. Elders are people who have all their degrees but have chosen not to be a High Priest(ess). They are the mediators and spiritual resources of the coven. They also don’t have to be old but rather just experienced in Wicca and magick.
