Love is Eternal ~ A Poem

Hi everyone! I am back from my short little hiatus and hopefully that will be the end of inconsistent posting for a while. We are going to finish the week off with this post and Friday’s post. Next week we will get back to videos as well. I thought I would ease back in to the routine with a poem I wrote. Not quite sure if I am any good at poetry as my sister is the only one I’ve ever shown my work to. Hopefully it’s at least alright. I wrote this poem for Yule of 2017 just like my sister did for Apollo (link here to read her poem). Mine however is dedicated to Gaia.

Love is Everlasting

You’re earth around me

You make up soil beneath me

Wet, brown between toes

Birds in all the trees

The animals walking earth

The plants in the ground

Your scent in the air

It is crisp and brings me life

You are all I breath

I feel your presence

Your energy surrounds me

Coursing through bodies

I feel the beating

Drumming I feel in my heart

Your heart against mine

We are one together

Two halves of a whole united

Love is eternal

That is all I have for today. I’d love to hear any of your pagan/wiccan themed poems or see any of your art related to the subject as well. Feel free to send them to wiccans_arent_wicked@hotmail.com and if you want I’ll even post them to the blog with any info of yours you want attached. Make sure you subscribe to me here and on twitter so you get notifications when I post and when I upload videos to youtube. Until next time, Blessed Be!

Mental Illness Ritual Bath

Hi everyone. Today I wanted to talk about something that affects me. I want to talk about mental illness. However I want to make some disclaimers before I start. Firstly I want to talk about what I am referring to when I say I am affected by mental illness. When it comes to physical sickness there are certain things you go to the hospital for and some things your don’t. A regular cold or a little flu are not hospital worthy. Despite that though you are still sick. When I think of how mental illness affects me I think of it as I have the cold (and occasionally flu) equivalent of mental illness. Do I need meds and a therapist for it? No. Do I still feel unwell? Yes. So I just wanted to put that out there before anyone questions me on just how severe my mental illness is or whatever. My second disclaimer is this: Nothing I say in this post is going to cure your mental illness. May it help you cope? sure. Could it potentially alleviate some symptoms or at least make them slightly more bearable? Maybe, but no promises. Everyone’s journey is different. And I just hope that maybe you can get something out of this.

When it comes to me I always (especially in the mornings) have a higher than average anxiety level, for no good reason at all. And every once in a while I’ll experience symptoms of depression. Usually I’ll be very irritable and very low energy. Last week and the week before I was experiencing this. And by the end of last week I decided enough was enough and that I was going to try and do something to get out of this funk. So I made a ritual self love/happiness bath. I would like to share it with you. I feel that this is a mix of both a spell and a ritual so I will leave this in both of those sections in our BoS.

preview

Ingredients:

  • Epsom salt
  • Lavender
  • Rose quartz
  • Green Kyanite
  • Green Obsidian
  • Amythest
  • Some seashells
  • Yellow Candle
  • Incense (I used one that’s for the heart chakra)

Steps to making the ritual bath:

  1. Sage your crystals and yourself
  2. In some sort of container (I used my big cauldron) mix together the lavender, the epsom salt, the crystals, and the shells while thinking about the intention of your bath
  3. With the bathroom lights off start running your bath and add the ingredients to the water
  4. Have your candle and incense on the bathtub ledge or nearby.
  5. Once in the tub light the candle and the incense
  6. Call upon whoever you wish and ask them to help you find the joy you’ve been lacking and to give you the strength to get through the rough time you’re experiencing. I called upon Gaia and Aphrodite.
  7. Enjoy your bath, you could meditate, do a face mask, watch your favourite show, read a book, whatever brings you joy.
  8. Thank whoever you called upon when you are done.

If you desire to have a sacred circle feel free, you can also make the water sacred by adding rosemary. I don’t always feel the need to do sacred circles especially when I am doing impromptu rituals/spells (like I was in this situation). Please feel free to share your journey with us, or any spells/rituals that you do to aid in your mental health down below, along with any other thoughts or questions you may have. Make sure you follow me here and on twitter so you get notifications when I post and when I upload videos to youtube. Until next time, Blessed Be!

Aphrodite

Aphrodite is one of the main goddesses in my life. She represents a huge part of myself and she was a big part of my reiki journey when I was learning my placements. Since Valentine’s day is tomorrow I figured I would dedicate this post to her. Today we are going to talk about some of her associations, her birth story, a ritual you could do to honor her, and a love spell that you can ask her to help you with (that is Wiccan rede kosher).

Aphrodite’s Associations

Aphrodite is the goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, sensuality, and procreation.

A conch shell is her symbol.

Her sacred animals are the dove and the goose.

Her sacred plants are myrtle and rose.

The myth about Aphrodite’s birth

It is said that Ouranos went to Gaia looking to find intimacy. When Ouranos exposed himself, his son, Kronos, ambushed him and cut off his fathers genitals. Kronos then threw his father’s genitals into the sea. As soon as Ouranos genitals touched the sea they were enveloped by the waves and a white foam spread around it. From that sea foam grew a maiden. This maiden was Aphrodite.

A Ritual for Aphrodite

You will need:

  1. A candle placed in the center of your kitchen table
  2. Incense (pref frankincense)
  3. A meal offering or symbolic offering – Olive oil, Salt, bread, wine

Decorate the altar (i.e. The kitchen table) with symbols of Aphrodite: Images of Her, flowers, images of doves, swans, sparrows or their feathers and seashells.

Begin by washing your hands with soap and water or with a salt or sugar scrub.

Light the incense. Cleanse the area and yourself (you may opt to create a sacred circle). Set the incense back on the altar and let it continue to burn.

Light the second candle:
“Aphrodite, I come before you on this day in joy and thankfulness.”

Recite a prayer to Aphrodite. You could come up with something from your heart (pre-written or on the fly), or you could recite either Orphic Hymn to Aphrodite or the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite.

List the blessings you have received from Aphrodite in the past year and talk about the challenges in the coming year. Present offerings.

Libations:

“Aphrodite, in thanks for your many gifts, as I have just related, I pour out this libation to you.”

Drink the rest saying: “By the will of the Gods, I have this wine/juice that I need not know thirst.”

Feast:
Take the bread and dip it in olive oil and sprinkle it with salt. Place a bit in the libation bowl or offering dish and eat the rest.
“By the will of the Gods, I have food to fill my belly that I need not know hunger.”

Closing:

“Aphrodite, I thank you for hearing my prayer.” Snuff out the candle.

Put out the incense and take the water, the libation and the offering outside.

A Feast for Aphrodite

Aphrodite is the Goddess of love, sensuality and all great passions. She is appropriately invited to any feast celebrating these things and food is, of course, an appropriate offering to her.

Aphrodite says, love what you eat, eat what you love and bring all your senses to the table! She is a very appropriate tutelary Goddess for the sensual Kitchen Witch.

Aphrodite is especially associated with apples due to the story of the golden apple: Eris tossed an apple into the crowd of Goddesses with a note that said “for the fairest”. Paris was selected to choose which Goddess got the apple, and he chose Aphrodite (really he was choosing the instrument of his doom… ) and as a reward he won the love of the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen, Queen of Sparta who was already married to a warlord, or rather the brother of a warlord, thus the Trojan war began.
Some modern scholars insist that the golden apple was in fact a quince.

One food to avoid when honoring Aphrodite is pork, as it was a wild boar that killed her beloved Adonis.

Some foods associated with Aphrodite:

(You may also wish to honor Aphrodite with foods associated with Her planet, Venus)

Menu for Aphrodite’s Feast

Appetizer

Love Spell to Attract your Soulmate

You’ll need:

  1. Four red spell candles
  2. Two white spell candles
  3. Candle holders
  4. A lighter or match

When you speak, do so with strength and authority. You needn’t shout, but use a powerful, commanding tone of voice.

Now, you want to find a space that you can make your circle in. Sit or stand in the middle. Place one red candle about two feet in front of you. Place the other red candles about two feet to your right, to your left, and behind you. If possible, orient yourself to the North. Now, sit/stand in the middle and close your eyes. Breathe deeply for a moment, feeling relaxing energy flowing in with every in-breath and out with every out-breath. When you feel relaxed and focused, open your eyes. Say:

I call upon thee, Spirit of Earth, to support me with your grounding and strength. Light the candle in front of you.

Turn ninety degrees to your right. Say:

I call upon thee, Spirit of Fire, to strengthen my passion and emotion this night (or day). Light the candle you are facing. Turn ninety degrees to your right. Say:

I call upon thee, Spirit of the Wind, to free the path between me and my goal. Light the candle you are facing. Turn ninety degrees to your right. Say:

I call upon thee, Spirit of the Water, to consume my intent to create. Light the candle you are facing. Turn ninety degrees to your right. You should be facing the direction where you began. Say:

Within the balance of nature, I stand! Light one of the white candles and place it in front of you and slightly to the left. Say:

I am one with the power of nature. I am blessed to announce this night, that my intent is to draw my soulmate to me. Light the second white candle and place it in front of you and slightly to the right of the first white candle. Say:

As I will it, I bring into my life the soulmate that I crave, the love that I deserve. I am a powerful creator, and as I will, shall be. Reach out and pick up the two white candles, one in each hand, and raise them in front of you to eye-level. Say:

Two lights in an endless world, united at last by love and by passion. Tilt the two candles to combine their flames into one. Say:

As we come together as one, I bring my wish to pass. So mote it be! Blow out the combined flame of the white candles. Say:

I release this intent into the universe. My creation has begun, and I eagerly await my love. Turn ninety degrees to your left. Say:

Water I command thee! Carry my intent to the ends of the earth! Blow out the candle in front of you. Turn ninety degrees to the left. Say:

Wind I command thee! Carry my intent to the ends of the universe! Blow out the candle in front of you. Turn ninety degrees to the left. Say:

Fire I command thee! Empower my intent and bring haste to the process! Blow out the candle in front of you. Turn ninety degrees to the left. Say:

Earth I command thee! Bring my love to me! Blow out the candle in front of you.

Note: if you don’t feel comfortable commanding the elements you can say for example “Fire I ask of thee!”

Sit/Stand back in the center of your circle. Close your eyes. Breathe deeply for a moment, feeling the energy that you have generated coarsing through your being. Slowly, let the feeling fade back out. When you feel grounded and relaxed once more, open your eyes. Give thanks to the spirits who assist you, and resume your daily life.

Car Protection Spell

Hello everyone! On the last full moon I decided that I wanted to create a spell bag for my car. I get really bad road anxiety and thought maybe this will help calm my nerves. So below is the spell I made. *disclaimer* I didn’t make up the words however. I found them on pinterest.

Ingredients:

  1. A little cloth or mesh bag
  2. Cinnamon for protection
  3. Ginger to make the spell more powerful
  4. Sage for protection
  5. Salt for protection
  6. Black tourmaline for protection
  7. Clear quartz to boost the spell
  8. Rose Quartz because it is my favourite and brings me peace (sub with your favourite or ignore)
  9. Reiki symbol for protection (if you aren’t trained in reiki feel free to skip this one or put in another sigil)

Image result for sigil for protection

7. Sigil sewn to outside of bag for protection

Steps:

  1. Create a sacred circle using your preferred method (I use sage and my athame)
  2. Call upon your desired gods and goddesses to help you (I called on Hercules and Gaia), air (for safe travels), and fire (to power the spell)
  3. Sew on the sigil
  4. As you fill the bag with your ingredients chant:

On this night, I invoke the powers of fire and air (add names of gods and goddesses if you like) to protect me from all that would harm me, whether physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually.

5. Now you are done creating the bag. Bring the bag to your car and tie it to your rearview window with three knots. (You could also just tie the knots and then put the bag in the glove compartment) As you tie the knots say:

With each knot, I bind this spell

Safety, protection, all is well

Sheltered and shielded, this vehicle shall be

Three times three, SO MOTE IT BE!

I hope you get some use out of my spell. Let me know what you think of it in the comments along with any other thoughts or questions. Make sure you follow me here and on twitter so you get notifications when I post. Don’t forget about my youtube either! I upload a video every Thursday. Until next time Merry Meet and Blessed Be.

Green Obsidian

Green obsidian is used a lot during reiki to help balance the heart chakra specifically but also the throat chakra too. This stone removes hooks and ties caused from other people. It is great for treating the gallbladder and the heart. Not only is it great for relaxation and stress but it helps ease insomnia, protects you from nightmares, promotes the ability to flow with change, it promotes confidence, and helps you with the idea that everything is alright.

This stone is great for people who want personal counselling but don’t seem to be getting anywhere as it will help them really tackle their problems and help them become more self reliant. It is also great at keeping people away that will only drag you down with their own personal crises. Keep this crystal on you if you work with people (especially troubled ones) to keep your energies light and positive.

Lastly, if you worship Gaia, like myself, and you want to have some sort of tribute to her on your altar or make a little gaia jar this is a great crystal to put in it!

Wheel of the Year: Litha

So tomorrow is Litha/Midsummer/Summer Solstice so now is a better time than any to talk about what Litha is and what we do to celebrate!

So Litha is celebrated on the summer solstice of each year which is June 21st. This day is the opposite of Yule and celebrates the longest day of the year. On this day the sun god is at his peak and is at his strongest. The Goddess is very pregnant at this point which can be seen in our fields and gardens as crops are in the midst of growing. And while we are excited about the strength of the god and the pregnancy of the goddess we are sad because after this day the god will only become weaker until his death on Samhain.

Some ways to celebrate on this day are to light a bonfire in tribute of the sun god, place an offering in a body of water to encourage water supply to the thirsty crops, watch the litha sunrise and sunset, charge your crystals in the magickal energy of the sun, create a magick wand, leap the bonfire for luck and health in the coming year, wear a crown of flowers in your hair. Now is also a great time to try and see the fae. Keep an eye out especially around your garden. This is a traditional time to either dedicate yourself the god and goddess or to renew your vows to them.

Now is a good time to celebrate deities such as these:

Father Gods and Mother Goddesses, Pregnant Goddesses and Sun Deities. Particular emphasis might be placed on the Goddesses Aphrodite, Astarte, Freya, Hathor, Ishtar, Venus and other Goddesses who preside over love, passion and beauty. Other Litha deities include Athena, Artemis, Dana, Kali, Isis, Juno, Apollo, Dagda, Gwydion, Helios, Llew, Oak Holly King, Lugh, Ra, Sol, Zeus, Prometheus, Ares, Mother Earth, Father Sun, the fey, fairy folkand Thor.

http://www.ravenandcrone.com

And as I always say on any sabbat it is customary to perform a ritual (Midsummer/Litha Ritual), go for a nature walk, eat food in season, do divination and/or magick for healing, growth, empowerment, and love.

Thanks for reading! What are you going to do to celebrate this Litha? Let me know in the comments along with any other thoughts or questions you may have. Also don’t forget to follow me here and on twitter to get notifications when I post! I hope you have a lovely Litha! Until next time, Merry Meet and Blessed Be.

The Greek Pantheon

I figured it’s about time we started talking about pantheons since your pantheon is usually one of the first things you think about when starting the Wiccan path. A pantheon is the origin of the gods and goddesses you worship. There’s Greek, Roman, Norse, Celtic, Egyptian, and many many more. Today I thought it would be good to start with Greek as it is my pantheon and so it is what I am most familiar with. I obviously will not be able to account for all gods and goddess but I will include the main ones and any other I deem important in my craft.

Gods

Zeus: So this is the ruler of Olympus. He is the God of the sky, thunder/lightning. He is the wife of Hera. His symbol is the thunderbolt. His sacred animals are the eagle, wolf, and woodpecker. He is the father of many other deities as he was very adulterous.

Poseidon: He is Zeus’ brother and is the ruler of the sea. He was the god of the sea, earthquakes, storms, and horses. His symbol is the trident and his sacred animals are fish, dolphin, horse, and bull. He was often worshipped at a fertility God.

Hades: This is Zeus’ and Poseidon’s brother. He is the ruler of the underworld. His symbols are cerberus, drinking horn, and Cypress. He is known for abducting Persephone and making her his wife.

Ares: He is the son of Zeus and Hera. He is the God of war. His symbols are the spear, helmet, chariot, and flaming torch. His sacred animals are the dog, vulture, and Boar. He was known for being the lover of Aphrodite. He was the father of the Amazons.

Apollo: He is the son of Zeus and Leto. He is the twin brother of Artemis. He is the God of  music, poetry, art, oracles, archery, plague, medicine, sun, light, and knowledge. His symbols are the lyre, laurel wreath, bow, and arrows. His scared animals are the python, raven, wolf, swan, and dolphin.

Dionysus: He is the son of Zeus and Semele. He is the God of grape harvest, winemaking and wine, of ritual madness, religious ecstasy and theatre. His symbols are thyrsus, grapevine, and leopard skin. His sacred animals were the panther and the cheetah. He was considered one of the supreme rulers of the earth.

Hermes: He is the son of Zeus and Maia. He is the God of trade, thieves, travellers, sports, athletes, shepherds, land travel, and literature, and border crossings. His symbols are talaria, caduceus, and the lyre. His sacred animals are the tortoise and he rooster. He was the messenger of the Gods. He was considered the patron of poetry and brought the souls to the underworld. He was the only one other than Hades and Persephone that was allowed to come and go from the underworld without consequence.

Pan: He is the nature, wooded areas, pasturelands, and agriculture. He is a satyr. His symbols is reeds, and the pan flute. I consider him to be my patron.

Goddesses

Hera: She is the Queen of the Gods. She is the goddess of marriage, women, birth, and the Heavens. She is married to Zeus. Her symbols are diadem, scepter, and pomegranate. Her sacred animals are the peacock and cow.

Athena: She is the daughter of Zeus. She is the goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill. Her symbols are olive trees, aegis, armor, helmets, spears, gorgoneion. Her sacred animals are owls and snakes. She is said to have been born from Zeus’s head full grown and in armor.

Aphrodite: She is thought to be born from the foam in the waters of paphos due to Cronus throwing his slewn father’s (Uranus) genitals into the sea. She is the goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, and procreation. She is also the wife of Hephaestus. Her symbols are the rose, scallop shell, girdle, and mirror. Her sacred animals are dolphins, myrtle, dove, sparrow, and swan.

Artemis: She is the daughter of Zeus and Leto. She is the twin sister of Apollo. She is the goddess of the hunt, wild animals, wilderness, childbirth, forests and hills, the moon, archery, and virginity. She is also the protector of women and children. Her symbols are the bow and arrow, and the moon. Her sacred animals are stags, hunting dogs, bears, and deer.

Demeter: She is the goddess of agriculture, fertility, sacred law, and the harvest. Her symbols are the cornucopia, wheat, the torch, and bread. Demeter is the mother of Persephone. When Persephone was found to be tethered to the underworld after her abduction Persephone was granted to ability to be up on earth with her month 4 months of the year. You can see this in the seasons. In the spring demeter is looking forward to seeing her daughter, in the summer her daughter is there, in the fall and winter Demeter is missing her daughter more and more.

Gaia: She is the primordial earth, the mother goddess. She is the goddess of the earth, mother earth if you will. She is the mother of the titans. She is my matron.

Hecate: She is the goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, moon, ghosts, and necromancy. Her symbols are torches, keys, and crossroads. Her sacred animals are black dogs and polecats.

I’ve always felt deeply connected with the greek pantheon. I remember reading Percy Jackson and the Olympians and wishing I could believe in the gods and goddess the book talked about and now here I am.

I hope you guys enjoyed today’s post. If you have any thoughts or questions please feel free to leave them in the comments. What pantheon should I talk about next? Also make sure to subscribe so you get notifications when I post. Thanks for reading and until next time Merry Meet and Blessed Be.

Matrons and Patrons

Hi everyone! Today I want to talk about Matrons and Patrons and what that’s all about. I remember when I first started my Wiccan journey I was very obsessed with figuring out my Matron. Having come from Christianity originally and wanting nothing to do with it, I wasn’t as interested in finding my patron because I had just come from a masculine dominated religion. All this talk of Matrons and Patrons and I still haven’t explained what they are though. So firstly, you can have more than just one each. A matron though is the main goddess(es) in your life (whether it be your whole life or just a portion of your life). A patron is the main god(s) in your life. And like the matron that god can be around for your whole life or for just a portion of your life. Also typically your matron and patron come from the same pantheon.

lagniappe-loot-god-goddess-stick-incense

There a couple of methods to finding your matron and patron. A lot of the time your matron and patron find you. Some say signs from the god and goddess show up calling you to them. It could be symbols associated with them or animals. Some have dreams or visions about them. If you find that your matron or patron are not coming to you don’t feel bad about it. I didn’t feel like I was getting any signs either. Sometimes that means you just aren’t ready to work with deity or you could just be missing the signs. For those of us who are not as fortunate to see the signs there are other methods. You can try meditation. If you’re experienced with meditation you can do it on your own, if you aren’t (like myself) there are guided meditations for finding your matron and patron on youtube. I personally am garbage at meditation, guided or not, so this method didn’t work for me. You can study pantheons and see what you connect with. This will make your search a little easier. I have been deeply connected to greek mythology since I was in middle school so I always knew greek was my pantheon. What worked for me was doing a tarot spread. If you click this link this will bring you to the tarot spread I used matron/patron tarot spread.

219dc07d3689411af60d3853b19d7301

My journey to finding my deities was a bit interesting and it was kinda what started me on my Wicca path as a whole. I was really searching for the religion that fit best with me. I had found Wicca and although the beliefs clicked with me I was hesitant to commit myself to it because of it being so taboo. One day the name Hecate came into my head. Just out of nowhere. I couldn’t get her name out of my head. I was meditating and envisioned a woman with black hair. This to me was some sort of proof to my logical brain. I couldn’t stop thinking about the goddess of Magick and mystic and there she is walking around in my mind. This must be it. And once all of that clicked, Hecate was out of my brain. I truly believe her sole purpose in my journey was to scream at me and say “hey you, this is legit, this is your path, now get to it”. But after Hecate did her job there really wasn’t any other gods or goddesses that stuck out to me. I wasn’t really seeing any signs…. And that wasn’t cutting it for me. I decided if they weren’t going to come to me I would come to them. So I did the spread from the link above and it gave me some direction. But now that I’m typing this I feel a calling to do this spread again. When I originally did this I was inexperienced, firstly in tarot and secondly with my spirituality. This spread did help me find Gaia who I work with very closely now. But other than that I find I don’t really experience any other deities that I pulled. So if you guys would be interested in seeing the results from that spread you should let me know in the comments and I’ll make a post about it. As of right now my Matron is 100% Gaia. I work with her in everything I do and I feel her presence all the time. As for my patron I don’t feel any strong ties to any deity. I do feel more of a pull to Pan than any other but even so that pull isn’t very strong currently.

Once you find your matron and/or patron it can be nice to set up an altar specifically for them or to incorporate them on your regular altar. It is also nice to do rituals for them. Something I really like about my relationship with Gaia is I can just take my pendulum out and she will have conversations with me and help me figure stuff out. I find her to be very nurturing and social. Whenever I see a squirrel or bird linger a little longer I know it’s her saying hi. I’m very thankful to have her in my life.

If you have any thoughts, questions, or want to see the results from my matron/patron spread let me know in the comments! Thanks for reading. Merry Meet and Blessed Be!
