Shopping list for the Beginner Witch/Wiccan

Hi everyone! A couple weeks ago my boyfriend gave me the great idea to do this post and I thought it sounded so much fun. However before we start, you must remember that this is a generalized list. Obviously some people aren’t going to need all of these things for their path and some will need things I didn’t mention. This list is solely going to be based around what I would want in a beginners shopping list. Also keep in mind you don’t need any of these things to call yourself a witch or wiccan. When I first started my journey all I had to work with were the yankee style candles I already owned, the spices and herbs already in my kitchen, and I went to the dollarstore and bought a tin pot to act as a cauldron.

Tarot Series~Minor Arcana: Six of Wands

33c344834aacfe8a99fb82a8695a8bb4

When pulled upright this card is about accomplishing something that is giving you public recognition. You have reached your goals and you are being celebrated for it. You may have received an award as well. This card shows that you have found your strengths and how to use them to manifest the outcomes you want in life. The card before this (the five of wands) is a card about confusion. Pulling the 6 of wands shows that you have gotten past this confusion and have managed to achieve your goals. Although this card is mostly positive it is worth noting that a downside to this card could be that all this success is bringing self-importance, a large ego, and arrogance.

When pulled in reverse this card is about doubting your abilities and your abilities to reach your goals as a whole. You might be feeling negative about yourself because not only have you been failing yourself but you have been failing others This is telling you that you are lacking the confidence and ambition you need to achieve your goals. In order to reach your goals you need support from those around you to give you the recognition you need.

Here is a tarot spread to help you gain confidence in yourself so you can better achieve your goals. Take the 6 of wands out of the deck and meditate on your self doubts becoming your strengths. Then shuffle and pull the cards using your preferred method.

Tarot Series~Major Arcana Card 19: The Sun

fa61d2b8ce8ae04ae0c8140ba341f1c1

When upright this card is about success, radiance, and abundance. The sun gives strength and vitality. It says that much joy and happiness is coming to you. Due to being personally fulfilled you give others inspiration and joy too. Your warm energy draws people to you. You are also in a position where you are able to share your qualities and achievements with others. You radiate love and affection towards those you love. This card can show that you have a strong sense of confidence right now.

In reverse this card is about having a hard time finding the silver-linings in hard situations right now. This could be preventing you from what you need to progress. It could also be preventing you from being confident and powerful. This card could also mean you are being unrealistic. An example of this is that you may be overly optimistic about certain situations. Take these things into account to make sure you’re on the right track and your successes continue as they do.

Here is a tarot spread all about the sun card. It is great when you’re in need of some self-care and need to be reminded of your inner light. First I would take the sun card out of the deck and meditate on it while focusing on your confidence and joy. Then shuffle and pull the cards using your preferred method.

sunspread.jpg

Card 1: This card represents your inner light, the form in which your light will manifest and show itself.

Card 2: This represents where to apply yourself; where you can be most successful, issues and situations where you are your strongest.

Card 3: This card represents that which needs to be cleaned, the windowpane through which the light shines. These are obstacles that need to be removed, that eclipse the light. This is how you can shine.

Cards 4 and 5: These represent renewed innocence, the playfulness and freedom that come when your inner light shines brightly. Harmonize these two cards, find how they fit together, and what they have in common.

Letting go Ritual

First of all I just want to announce a giveaway opportunity! Be my 50th subscriber and get a free tarot reading. After the 50th subscriber I will do another giveaway for all my subscribers. Stay tuned for more info!

This weekend, as those of you know who follow me on twitter, I was going through a pretty nasty breakup. I am grateful to say that after reflecting on us, my partner has realized his rashness and we are going to work on the issues instead of just breaking up. Woohoo! But this weekend has really shown me how nasty and truly devastating a breakup really is. So I thought I would give you guys a little help on how to let go of something.

If you’ve watched friends, you’ve probably seen this ritual. This ritual is all about burning things to let them go. So whether you are going through a breakup; a death; trying to give up a habit; anything, get some photos; letters; or write down some feelings that have to do with what you’re letting go and burn it. Don’t be too specific. Let the universe really figure out what you need, just give the universe some guidelines. Also make sure you collect the things to burn when you in a good mindset and not super emotional. You don’t want to burn something that is actually important.

The new moon is the perfect time to set intentions. Because of this, the new moon is a great time to write a list of things you want to let go. Your list shouldn’t be you asking for things but rather should be affirmative statements. Date the list when you’re done and write “I accept these things into my life now or something better for the highest good and the good of all concerned.” This will ensure that what you are sending out won’t affect others negatively.

The burning should take 2 weeks later during the full moon, preferably outside. If you can’t do it outside, I would recommend doing it by an open window. While you are waiting for the full moon do some meditation and stop doing things that are making it hard to move one (if it is a breakup stop looking at your ex’s social media, stop going through pictures of your together, etc).

During the burning, start your fire if you’re outside and put everything in the fire one at a time and explain the significance of each piece as it burns. If you’re inside I would recommend putting everything into a cauldron, or whatever you have, one at a time while explaining the significance of each piece, and then light it all together. Regardless of your method while you are doing the burning chant “I release you, I am done.” You may start experiencing some emotions and that’s okay. Feel them but then move on.

I hope whatever you are going through gets better! Thank you for reading. What are you letting go of? Let me know in the comments along with any other thoughts or questions. Also, make sure to follow me on here and on twitter so you get notifications on when I post! Merry Meet and Blessed Be!

Tarot Series~Major Arcana Card 18: The Moon

crystal-visions-tarot

When pulled upright this card can mean that your imagination is taking the best of you. You are going down a path that you aren’t entirely sure of and it very well could be dangerous. The light of the moon in this card can bring you clarity and understanding. You should let your intuition guide you down this path. Be aware of the situations that are causing you fear and anxiety. Being aware of these things lets you not be deceived by yourself and keeps inner disturbances to a minimum. You need to take these memories and fear and let them go. All negative energy has to be released so it can be turned into something constructive and positive. This card could also mean that there is a hidden illusion in your life. There is a hidden truth that you have yet to discover.

When pulled in reverse this card can mean that there are some dark negative aspects in your life right now. That darkness could be confusion and unhappiness. Maybe you want to make progress but you aren’t quite sure how. The key to figuring this out is by letting go of your fears and anxieties. It is time to believe in yourself and move forward. This card in reverse also means you are in an intuitive period or you have recently just experienced a lot of confusion, anxiety, or self-deception. This card can also suggest that the things that were causing you confusion are slowly starting to go away and things are becoming clearer. You are started to get a hold of your fears and anxieties. All the negativity is slowly fading away.

Here is a great tarot spread that focuses on the moon card. It is great for bringing clarity to a confusing situation. First I would take out the moon card and meditate on it while thinking about a situation in your life that is causing you a lot of confusion. Next shuffle and pull your cards (only pull the first 3 cards in the beginning) using your preferred method.

moonspread

Card 1: This card is the Moon, the numinous dream image, representing magic, mystery and original beauty, the dark and the light, the beauty of the still night and the deep shadows. This card represents ideals and desires, intentions and clarity.

Card 2: This is the reflection in the water, the clouded sight, the mirror reflecting your biases and prejudices, the skewed perspective, the imperfect translation.

Card 3: This is that which the moonlight illumines, though dimly. These are the snatches of dreams you remember, the bits and pieces of clarity, what you can see from here.

Card 4: Take this card from the bottom of the deck and lay it next to card 3. This card represents that which is still in deep shadow, that which you can’t quite make out, hints and glimpses of things you don’t recognize. This is the darkness and confusion, or what is confusing you.

Both cards 3 and 4 are seen through the unclear glass, the biases shown in the reflection card. By comparing the three you can help determine and further define your perspective.

Cilantro/Coriander

cilantro-coriander-600x397.jpg

Cilantro and coriander come from the same plant and depending on where you are from are used interchangeably so for the sake of this post I will treat them as the same thing.

Cilantro has many magickal uses, the main one being love. Some of the other uses of it is for clairvoyance, divination, fertility, gain, health, healing, keeping secrets, passion, peace, protection, retention, and weddings.

Cilantro is associated with the planet mars, masculine energy, and the element of fire.

When used in spells it is great for love sachets and spells (remember though love spells have to be worded in a way that manipulates no ones personal will). You can add the powder of the seeds to wine to make a potion of lust (red wine would likely be best for this), you can hang in the home for protection, and you can use it crushed in drinks (like the wine) or in incense if you want to burn it). If you celebrate the great rite this is great to add to an elixir for your celebration. You can also through this instead of rice at a handfasting or add it to the handfasting cake.

If you like to use herbs to help with illness cilantro/coriander is best used for these ailments: digestive complications such as dyspepsia, stomachache, loss of appetite, and flatulence. I personally would brew a tea with cilantro/coriander in it to help relieve these issues.

Tarot Series~Major Arcana Card 17: The star

Screenshot 2018-08-03 at 8.58.49 PM

When pulled upright this card is about hope, renewed power, and strength. It shows how blessed you are by the universe and everything around you is evidence. This blessedness may not be evident right yet as this card follows the trauma of the tower card before it. Remember that all you need to be happy can be found within you and even though things may not seem to have turned around for you yet you need to have faith because the universe will bless you and bring you all that you need. Seeing this card in a reading shows that you have gone through a terrible life challenge but you’ve managed to go through it without losing hope. While you were suffering you may not have been aware of your own strength but now you may be starting to realize that your loss has helped you discover just how resilient and how much inner power you have.

When pulled in reverse this card is about feeling as though everything is turned against you. Challenges that would normally excite you now feel like you can’t overcome them. You have lost faith in something, possibly yourself or something you normally find dear. This card in reverse tells us to nurture our sense of hope and positive energy to help us feel joy rather than fear.

Here is a tarot spread that focuses on the star card. This spread is great when you are surrounded by darkness and need a little taste of hope. First I would take the star card out of the deck and meditate on it while focusing on what it feels like to feel hopeful. Then shuffle and pull the cards as you see fit.

starspread

Card 1: This is something to hope for; a sign, a goal to work towards. Remember you can always find something positive, even in the most negative-seeming cards. Especially if this card is negative, you have to find that little glimmer.

Cards 2 and 3 represent positive things you can work on right now while keeping that Star in the corner of your sight.

Card 2: This represents pouring the water on the earth: this is what you can do to nourish yourself physically, or issues that have been preventing you from taking adequate nourishment.

Card 3: This represents returning water back to water: this is how you can enrich your unconscious, your soul. This is what you need to work on for spiritual nourishment.

Tarot Series~Major Arcana Card 16: The Tower

the-tower

When pulled upright this card is about extreme change that is radical and momentous which is why the card looks so unnerving. In reality the meaning of this card is not as frightening as it looks usually. At the very root of this card it is about foundational, groundbreaking change. This card doesn’t have to be about a disaster or a great loss as change is just a natural part of life even if it can seem scary because it means we have to abandon old ways of thinking and explore new ones. When it comes to readings about work this card is about in inevitable argument. When this argument happens you must stay in control and keep your temper. When doing a reading about your love life this card can signify the relationship you’re in may be coming to an end. So if you see this card take it as a warning and fix your relationship while you have the chance.

When pulled in reverse this card is about a crisis in the making and you are struggling to avoid it. What you need to realize is that these breakdowns are not inherently bad as they can break down your on something that is false. This tower is built on a bad foundation and must fall, despite the pain it may cause you the end result will bring you peace.

Here is a tarot spread that focuses on the tower card. This spread is great for dealing with the aftermath of trauma. Before you do this spread I would take the tower card out of the deck and mediate on it while thinking about the trauma you are trying to deal with. Then shuffle and pull the cards as you see fit.

towerspread

Card 1: This is the lightning bolt, the illumination, the sudden realization, the trauma, or the cause, and your initial reaction.

Card 2: This represents the foundation you have built upon. These are roots that have been suddenly bared; if you can, now is a perfect opportunity to examine them. Did you build on sand or stone? This card represents what it was, and what it could be.

Cards 3-7 represent the pieces falling around you, that went into the building of this structure. These are the blocks, the broken watch parts, that were running smoothly, (or were at least running), and are now divided and altered. Look at these pieces, now separate from each other, and sort the useful from that which no longer serves you. What would you like to keep? What will you discard? What might be kept, but in a modified form?

Tasseography 101

Today I thought we would talk about tasseography. What exactly it is, how to do a reading, and some resources to help you figure out what the symbols mean.

Firstly, tasseography is a fancy word for a tea leaf reading. A tea leaf reading is a form of divination where you look at pictures created by tea leafs, coffee grounds, or wine sediment, typically from inside a teacup. One can do this for themselves or others. It is commonly thought that the drinker of the beverage is the one the reading is for.

So in order to do the reading you first need to have a proper cup. Your best bet is to have a traditional white interior teacup. You can technically do it with any cup but the white of the cup will make the tea leaves easier to read. And a teacup typically is wide, shallow, and has sloping sides which makes it easier to see the patterns on your cup. For more advanced readings you can also get special cups for tasseography that look similar to the teacup in the picture above.

Next you need to have the right type of tea leaves. Medium/fine tea leaves will work best as it will make it easier to form pictures. Also if you use a tea with a scent you particularly enjoy or have a spiritual connection to your reading will be even more fun to do. When making the tea if you make the tea in a teapot do not strain the loose tea leaves when you pour. If making directly in the cup just pour water over the loose tea.

cup-of-tea

Now you need to prepare the area to do the reading. You’ll want to be somewhere comfortable and cozy without any distractions. Have a table, a tablecloth/altar cloth if you’d like, and if you’d like you can cast a circle or even say a prayer of protection so no negativity can bother you during this time.

Serve the tea as usual to the person who is asking the question. Have them drink it all until about a teaspoon of tea is left at the bottom. If the person who is asking the question doesn’t like tea put about a teaspoon of tea leaves (of their choice) in their cup with a teaspoon of liquid. When the person is done with their tea get them to think of the question they want answered. Have the person hold the cup in their left had and swish the cup to the left three time, then have them flip the cup upside down on the saucer gently so the water runs out, then while the cup is upside down on the saucer have them turn the cup three times to the left with their left hand, lastly have them put their hands on the cup and think about their question again for 7 seconds. When you turn the cup over turn the cup so the handle faces the person asking the question.

Now it is time to read the leaves. The placement of the leaves within the cup are important to the reading. The following is the meaning of the different positions gotten from wikihow (other sources will tell you the same thing, I just find wikihow is great for explaining things simply)

Zones from top to bottom may represent either “distance” or “weight” of the omens. Images near the top (rim) are close while images near the bottom are distant. In terms of time, the distance from rim to base represents approximately 6 months. However, “distance” may also refer to relationship to a person or goal. The other way of looking at it is that images at the base of the cup can represent a “heavy” (ill) omen and, as they come nearer the rim, are “light” or joyful omens. The context will determine which is applicable. Context and symbolism are most important. Trust your instincts.

The handle of the cup is known as the “domain” and images near the handle are images related to home life and family. The further from the handle an image is the more “outside” the omen. Symbols opposite the handle relate to work or strangers, somewhere in between might relate to non-immediate family or “a friend of a friend.” Images to the RIGHT of the handle indicate something coming TO the querent while images to the LEFT of the handle represent things coming FROM the domain.

A big clump of tea leaves with no discernible image might augur trouble on its way. If it is opposite to the handle, the trouble will likely be not of your making but if it is under the handle, it is considered to be of your making.

If there remains a drop or two of liquid tea that didn’t come off with the draining, these are considered to be tears. It might indicate past or future sadness, dependent on the context of the rest of the reading.

And then it is a matter of looking at the patterns and using your intuition to find shapes within the leaves. One thing about tea leaves is just because you see a certain image doesn’t mean everyone looking at it will also see it, they may see something entirely different. Despite this it is important you trust your intuition as you are the one doing the reading after all. As for the meaning of the images there are many resources for that and after practice you likely won’t need these resources anymore. Lastly, if you find different resources differ in meanings on a certain image use your intuition to decide which is right for the situation.

Happiness Candle Spell

Materials:

  1. Candle (yellow is happy to me so that is the colour I picked)
  2. oil/liquid to anoint candle (I used lemon juice and vanilla extract)
  3. Herbs for happiness (I used coffee, cinnamon, ginger, salt, catnip, cumin, and bay leaf)
  4. Something to carve with (I used a tack)

Instructions:

  1. Start by cleansing the candle and the carving item with sage.
  2. While saging ask your deities (or whatever power you believe in) to cleanse both items and to bless your candle
  3. Carve the name of the person the spell is for, the word happiness, and a sigil that represent what you want to come of the spell into the candle. Below is the sigil I used.null
  4. Next anoint the candle. Take the liquid you are using and dip two fingers in it. Take you fingers and starting at the top by the wick brush your fingers down the candle and stop at the centre. Continue this until the whole top half of the candle is covered. Then so the same process but start at the base of the candle and make your way to the centre. Do this for the whole bottom half of the candle. While you are anointing the candle visualize what you want the results of your spell to look like and really focus on it.
  5. While your candle is wet roll your candle in the herbs or sprinkle the herbs onto your candle. While you are doing this focus visualizing the results you want to happen from the spell.
  6. After this say these words 3 times (or make your own) while touching or holding the candle:

When the candle burns the name engraved shall receive love, joy, happiness, and peace. Today, tomorrow, now and forever for anything less must now cease. Anger, sadness, worry, and pain are gone for he (or she/they/I) release. From now on and forever more happiness will increase.

      7. Finish be saying so mote it be, blessed be.

I made this spell myself, I hope you get use out of it and feel free to adjust it how you see fit. Thanks for reading! Merry Meet and Blessed Be!
