Birthday Celebrations with a Wiccan twist

Hi everyone! Tomorrow is my 21st birthday so I thought I might do a post on how to celebrate your birthday with a little bit of a Wiccan twist. Obviously the specifics will depend on the person and what time of year your birthday is.

Rituals

So there are definitely some rituals you can do for your birthday. You can do one as simple as making a wish as you blow out your candles on your cake or as in depth as a dedication ritual to the faith or to a specific deity.

Something that I think is really beautiful is the idea of dedicating yourself on your birthday. It is very symbolic of being reborn into your spiritual journey. How one does a dedication ritual is dependent on many things but firstly whether or not you’re in a coven or if you’re solitary. If you are in a coven you will likely have certain traditions for this sort of ritual. However if you are a solitary you will have a lot more options. I’m not one to follow a ritual word for word from the internet. I typically like to wing it myself and do whatever feels right. I do know that many people (especially those of you who are new to the path) like to have more specific instructions though so I will give a guideline as to how I would approach a self dedication and then leave a link or two to some as well.

When I do my self dedication ritual someday I envision myself being either in the forest or somewhere I can connect with all 4 elements. So for example camping in eyesight of a lake or ocean, with a bonfire, feeling the breeze against my skin. I would also do this at night as I feel a deep connection with the moon. I then would go on to talk to the universal energy source about what Wicca means to me and how it has affected my life. I then would talk about my desire to dedicate myself to the path. I would finish by thanking the universal energy source and then by meditating.

Here are some links to other dedication rituals to give you some more ideas.

Simple Wiccan Dedication Ritual

Witchcraft/Divination

So it’s your birthday (or someone you know’s birthday) and you want to add a little magick to the day. You can insert a little kitchen magick into their birthday cake ( click here for birthday magick ideas) or encourage them to make a wish on their birthday candles. Usually in Wicca we stay away from selfish magick but your birthday is all about you so if there is any magick (as long as it still harms none) that you want to do that may be more vain today is the day to do it.

Divination is also something you can do to celebrate your big day. Specifically what this near year as in store for you. There are tons of birthday tarot spreads on pinterest you can look at but I’ll leave two here for your leisure.

You can also do runes, scrying, tasseography, pendulum work, and any other divination you enjoy doing as well.

Gifts

If you’re the friend or family member of Wiccan and want to give them something related to their faith there are lots of options. For those of you who have the money to spend you could get them a new book about Wicca, you could get them something for their altar they’ve been talking about needing, you can give them a crystal you think they could benefit from, or help them stock up on their herbs. This year my partner got me a big cast iron cauldron, a lovely little book about the history and uses on cauldrons, and he got me incense to help heal the chakras. Don’t be afraid to ask the Wiccan in your life if there is anything they’ve wanted or needed for their faith.

Some of us though aren’t always in the spot to buy a gift. That’s totally okay, been there done that. You could go on a nature walk and see if you come across anything that is calling to be a gift. Maybe you find a feather, a pinecone, a beautiful stone, or a flower. Any of those things would make a beautiful gift. What I typically do when I am short on money is I will go to the dollarstore and get a little jar and then use materials I already have to make a jar spell. So I will think of something I want for my loved one (happiness for example) and I will look up all the different herbs, crystals, objects, etc that correspond with what I want to achieve and put it all in the container. If you want to see a post about jar spells let me know as I have made a few. You can also give someone a blessing. Example below from http://onespiritx.tripod.com/bless01.htm

May your spirit

soar gracefully

on the whispering breeze.

May your joy

run strong

as the deepest seas.

May your soul

reach out

to embrace the sky.

May your heart

guide you truly

as the years go by.

If you are gifted in anyway you can also use those gifts as a gift. So if you are great at a certain type of divination you could give them a reading. If you are trained in reiki you could give them a free session. You could offer to sage their home.

I hope you all enjoyed this today’s post and got some ideas for your own and for your loved ones’ birthdays. How do you celebrate your birthday? Tarot Series~Minor Arcana: Seven of Cups

c54bc59979c8ee50caf02d322726966e

When pulled upright this card is about new opportunities and experiences but it focuses a lot of illusions. It seems like you have new opportunities to choose from and they sound great in theory, but when you crack the surface and look deeper into them you may realize that the opportunities aren’t as great as they first seemed to be. This card can also be about wishing for things instead of manifesting them. So you are spending your time wishing you were good at an instrument, better at meditating, losing weight. However, you aren’t willing to put in the work to actually attain those things. Now is a good time to take one of those things you’ve been wishing about and actually put in the actions needed to achieve it. You also may have a habit of making these plans up in your head to achieve your goals but then realize when you actually set out to do it your plan doesn’t really work. This card is essentially telling you to get out of the ideas phase and actually choose something to work towards.

When pulled in reverse this talks about how you have several choices to make and you are making these decisions based on your inner wisdom rather than what everyone else wants you to do. If you are in a situation with multiple opportunities presenting themselves to you, you should take these opportunities and compare them to your priorities to best decide which you should take on. You may be feeling overwhelmed by all the choices but picking through them and tossing some out of the competition should really make things go smoother. You don’t need to keep searching for some big idea. You have everything you need already.

Here is a tarot spread for when you have some tough choices to make. First I would take the seven of cups out of the deck and meditate on it while thinking of the various choices you have. Then shuffle and pull the cards using your preferred method.

Wiccan Rituals (Beltane ritual included)

Rituals are very misunderstood as a whole. A lot of people associate rituals with sacrifices and stuff like that. Every religion has rituals though and, unless you’re in some horrible cult, has nothing to do with sacrifices. Some religious rituals are things such as weddings, funerals, baptism, communion, bar mitzvah, circumcision, baby showers, and stuff like that.

If a Wiccan practices in a coven (a group of wiccans/witches) they tend to have specific rituals they do throughout the year that are tradition. Some bigger ones like initiation which is like a baptism (it is your dedication to the gods/goddesses) and handfasting (which is a pagan marriage and typically not legally binding).

But there are a lot of Wiccans who practice on their own and like I’ve said before we don’t have a church equivalent to go to so we typically worship on our own at our altars. One of our favourite ways to worship is to do a ritual. We tend to do rituals for different esbats (phases of the moon) and sabbats(holidays) but you can do them whenever you want. Rituals can be as simplistic or as complex as you want. I personally like simple rituals so I will write up an example of my favourite ritual I have done.

Wish Box Beltane Ritual:

Firstly you need a small wooden box, some paper, a pen, and anything you want to use to decorate your wooden box. If you have a cauldron use that but I don’t so I used a metal bucket with a small t-light candle in it. You also need herbs that correspond with what results you want.

I did this in my bathtub but you can do this at your altar or anywhere really. So to start you can by casting a circle if you’d like. You can mediate or do anything to prepare but once you are ready and your candles are lit you can call for your gods and goddesses. Because this was for Beltane I do this ritual for Pan and Demeter. You can also call any elements or other spirits now too. An example of calling them is to say something like “May Demeter, Pan, fire and earth elements assist me in this ritual”.

Next I put herbs in the fire (which is in your cauldron or bucket) and spoke while doing so.

Basilmay my life always be balanced

Cinnamonmay my business blossom and money come my way

Peppermintmay positive changes and restful sleep become part of my life

Thymemay renewed energy and health come into my life

Savorymay creativity flow through me

Cuminmay peace and harmony be welcome in my life

Saltmay my soul, mind, and body be cleansed.

Then I took my wishes that I wanted to happen fast and wrote them on paper and burned them. As they were burning I said “with harm to none may these wishes come quickly to those who write them. By power of three, so mote it be” I then took my wishes I wanted to be long lasting and put it in the box I decorated and I put a sprig of babies breath in it and before I closed it said

“May the words contained come to pass, and celestial bodies lend their hand. By moon, stars, and sun as well, may wish be granted as spelled. Unless removed, the wish shall hold, and with harm to none, my request is done”.

thanked the gods for what they do and for helping my ritual. For example

” I give thanks to Demeter for the earth, agriculture, and fertility. I give thanks to Pan for agriculture and spring fertility. I thank you both and earth and fire for assisting me in this ritual. May any spirits that assisted be released”

Lastly I put out the fire with some bath water and this is when you can end the sacred circle.

You can find rituals online or you can make them up yourself. One of the great things I’ve learned about rituals is no matter how badly you screw it up (I set the smoke detector off once) the gods and goddesses still appreciate the work you put into it.

So that’s a little bit about rituals. As always I encourage you to comment with any thoughts or questions you may have. Merry Meet and Blessed Be!
