Freyja

A few weeks ago I made a post about Aphrodite which triggered a post request from a subscriber. She follows the Norse Pantheon and asked if I would do a post on Freyja. Since it is still the month of love I figured I would make this for her.

Freyja’s Associations

Freyja is the goddess of love, sex, beauty, fertility, gold, seiðr, war, and death.

Her symbol is the Northern Lights

Her sacred animals are cats and wild pigs

Her sacred plants are cowslip, primrose, and daisies

Freyja Mythology

Freya was the Norse Goddess of beauty that no man could resist when she wore her enchanting necklace known as the Brisingamen. This necklace was made for her my four dwarves. They demanded that as repayment she spent a night with each of them in turn.

Although she had many affairs she loved her husband deeply and when he went missing she cried tears of gold. She set out to find him by transforming herself into a bird with her magical cloak.

When she found he had become an ugly sea monster. Freya remained by his side and became enraged when he was murdered, threatening to kill the other Gods. To placate her Od was offered a place in Valhalla despite not dying as a hero on the battlefield.

Ritual for Freyja

Greeting Freyja

It will be helpful to have:

A couple of candles

A space to set the candles and make a simple ve or shrine for Freyja

An offering to pour for Her (Mead is good, so is any sweet or strong drink.  Lacking those, use sweet teas or fruit juices.  Lacking those, use water.)  The Lady is going to be your guest, so at least provide Her with the kind of drink you would offer to a mortal guest.  There are many other gifts and offerings that are appropriate for Her; some are listed here.

Cleansing

First we do a cleansing.  Most traditions have some sort of cleansing rite, to prepare you and the space for the presence of and interaction with the divinity that you are calling.  Flames have been used to bless property in some places in Northern Europe, where a torch or light is carried to all parts of the property and the shadows chased out.  Some Heathens call on Thor in the Hammer Rite, but as I don’t have a regular practice involving him and She is perfectly capable of helping with this work I call to Her for it.

Take a candle and light it.  Say, “Sacred flame, in Freyja’s name, cleanse and bless this space.  Banish from it all baleful wights and wills and make it whole and holy.  In Freyja’s name, oh sacred flame, so be it.  Hail Blotgydja!”  Pass it in front of and around your body.  Walk with it around the space, making sure to shine the light in corners and dark spaces especially.  Set the candle down in the space you want to use.

Invocation

Set up a space for Freyja.  Include statuary images, or things that are important to Her, especially amber if you have any.  Face your shrine and call to Her.  You can say Her names, write out a wordy invocation (I like doing that, but that’s me) or sing to Her.  Here is a sample invocation that you may use if you like:

Hail to Freyja, cat-chariot riding,

Hail to Freyja in passion abiding,

Hail to Freyja in red-gold lust screaming,

Hail to Freyja in deep seidh-trance dreaming,

Hail to Freyja on falcon wings flying,

Hail to Freyja in dwarven bed sighing,

Hail to Mardoll in brightness and beauty,

Hail Blotgydja in your sacred duty,

Hail to Freyja in passion and power,

Hail to Freyja, bright Vanaheim’s  flower!

Hail, Freyja, Vanadis!  Be welcome in your shrine, be welcome my home, be welcome in my life.

Make Offerings

Now is the time to present Her with any offerings.  It’s good to come with gifts when meeting friends, whether new and prospective friends or long term ones.

Light a candle for Her, and say something like, “I light this candle in your honor.  May its warmth and brightness and sweet scent please you and bring you joy.  Hail Freyja!”

Pour the drink for Her, and say something nice about it.  “For you, Freyja, I pour this mead, the essence of honey transformed.  May its gold be like your gold, its warmth suffuse you, its flavor please you, its honey give you health and power.  Drink deep of it and may you find within it all that you want and all that you need.  Freyja, accept my offering!”  You can take a drink as well, sharing with Her if you like, just don’t do it from the portion offered.

If you have any other gifts for Her, talk them up and present them nicely to Her.  It’s not inappropriate to sing to Her.  She likes to have Her names sung and is known for a fondness for romantic and bawdy music.

Once you’ve given Her gifts, tell Her why you’ve called Her, even if it’s as simple as curiosity.

Then be silent.  Spend some time being quiet internally and externally, eyes closed or focused on an image that brings Her to mind.  You may feel Her presence as feelings of warmth and love.  You may see or hear Her in your mind.

Or you may feel nothing.  Sometimes it takes some time to recognize the presence of a deity and sometimes they just don’t seem to respond.  The Lady tends to be responsive to people, and She’s been growing more and more present over the last few years.

After you’re done thank Her and leave the space to end the rite.

Spell to do with Freyja

you may burn a pink candle for Friday or an amber-colored candle to honor the goddess Freya. It’s completely up to you. Light the candle and repeat the charm:

Freya’s day is Friday, and the thirteenth is today,
Let’s work with these energies in a magical way.
Freya, mistress of magic, bless us with your wisdom,
As the candle burns away, the good luck spell begins.
This good luck candle spell is spun from the heart,
Worked for the good of all, with a Witch’s art.

How to Best Utilize the Full Moon

Yesterday we had a super full moon and we will still be feeling the effects of it for a couple of days so I thought I would talk about the different things to keep in mind when there is a full moon and the different things you can do during it.

What to keep in mind

It is very important to remember that during a full moon emotions are heightened. This can be great because if you’re feeling happy or some other positive emotion that will be amplified. However if you are experiencing more negative emotions they can be amplified as well. It is best to keep heated debates on the back burner and any other conversation that may spark conflict. Something else to remember is during the full moon we are more prone to overreacting and making rash decisions. So when you’re freaking out about something or about to make a decision during the full moon really think about it. Is what you’re freaking out about really that important or are you making it bigger than it is? And should you really be making such an important decision on one night? Is waiting until tomorrow an option? If so you should probably take it.

Things to do on a full moon

  1. Do an esbat ritual for the goddess of your choice
  2. Do a full moon tarot reading for yourself, a friend, or get one done for you
  3. Charge your crystals and cleanse them with the energy of the full moon
  4. Take a ritual bath
  5. Do some magick
  6. Clear your home of any negative or stagnant energy
  7. Connect yourself with the element of water as it is effected by the phases of the moon
  8. Work with your menstrual cycle (whether that is through ovulation, your period, or pregnancy)
  9. Dance
  10. Do a drum circle
  11. Sit under the moon and absorb the energy it offers you
  12. Do some reiki or get some reiki done to you
  13. Talk to the moon like she is very old friend
  14. Meditate
  15. Start a gratitude journal
  16. Focus on self love and spoil yourself a little.

I hope you all enjoyed last nights beautiful full moon! Let me know what you did with it’s energies in the comments down below along with any other thoughts or questions you have. Make sure you follow me here and on twitter so you get notifications when I post and upload videos to youtube. Until next time, Blessed Be!

Aphrodite

Aphrodite is one of the main goddesses in my life. She represents a huge part of myself and she was a big part of my reiki journey when I was learning my placements. Since Valentine’s day is tomorrow I figured I would dedicate this post to her. Today we are going to talk about some of her associations, her birth story, a ritual you could do to honor her, and a love spell that you can ask her to help you with (that is Wiccan rede kosher).

Aphrodite’s Associations

Aphrodite is the goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, sensuality, and procreation.

A conch shell is her symbol.

Her sacred animals are the dove and the goose.

Her sacred plants are myrtle and rose.

The myth about Aphrodite’s birth

It is said that Ouranos went to Gaia looking to find intimacy. When Ouranos exposed himself, his son, Kronos, ambushed him and cut off his fathers genitals. Kronos then threw his father’s genitals into the sea. As soon as Ouranos genitals touched the sea they were enveloped by the waves and a white foam spread around it. From that sea foam grew a maiden. This maiden was Aphrodite.

Aphrodite-sea-foam-birth

A Ritual for Aphrodite

You will need:

  1. A candle placed in the center of your kitchen table
  2. Incense (pref frankincense)
  3. A meal offering or symbolic offering – Olive oil, Salt, bread, wine

Decorate the altar (i.e. The kitchen table) with symbols of Aphrodite: Images of Her, flowers, images of doves, swans, sparrows or their feathers and seashells.

Begin by washing your hands with soap and water or with a salt or sugar scrub.

Light the incense. Cleanse the area and yourself (you may opt to create a sacred circle). Set the incense back on the altar and let it continue to burn.

Light the second candle:
“Aphrodite, I come before you on this day in joy and thankfulness.”

Recite a prayer to Aphrodite. You could come up with something from your heart (pre-written or on the fly), or you could recite either Orphic Hymn to Aphrodite or the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite.

List the blessings you have received from Aphrodite in the past year and talk about the challenges in the coming year. Present offerings.

Libations:

“Aphrodite, in thanks for your many gifts, as I have just related, I pour out this libation to you.”

Drink the rest saying: “By the will of the Gods, I have this wine/juice that I need not know thirst.”

Feast:
Take the bread and dip it in olive oil and sprinkle it with salt. Place a bit in the libation bowl or offering dish and eat the rest.
“By the will of the Gods, I have food to fill my belly that I need not know hunger.”

Closing:

“Aphrodite, I thank you for hearing my prayer.” Snuff out the candle.

Put out the incense and take the water, the libation and the offering outside.

A Feast for Aphrodite

Aphrodite is the Goddess of love, sensuality and all great passions. She is appropriately invited to any feast celebrating these things and food is, of course, an appropriate offering to her.

Aphrodite says, love what you eat, eat what you love and bring all your senses to the table! She is a very appropriate tutelary Goddess for the sensual Kitchen Witch.

Aphrodite is especially associated with apples due to the story of the golden apple: Eris tossed an apple into the crowd of Goddesses with a note that said “for the fairest”. Paris was selected to choose which Goddess got the apple, and he chose Aphrodite (really he was choosing the instrument of his doom… ) and as a reward he won the love of the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen, Queen of Sparta who was already married to a warlord, or rather the brother of a warlord, thus the Trojan war began.
Some modern scholars insist that the golden apple was in fact a quince.

One food to avoid when honoring Aphrodite is pork, as it was a wild boar that killed her beloved Adonis.

Some foods associated with Aphrodite:

(You may also wish to honor Aphrodite with foods associated with Her planet, Venus)

Menu for Aphrodite’s Feast

Appetizer

Love Spell to Attract your Soulmate

You’ll need:

  1. Four red spell candles
  2. Two white spell candles
  3. Candle holders
  4. A lighter or match

When you speak, do so with strength and authority. You needn’t shout, but use a powerful, commanding tone of voice.

Now, you want to find a space that you can make your circle in. Sit or stand in the middle. Place one red candle about two feet in front of you. Place the other red candles about two feet to your right, to your left, and behind you. If possible, orient yourself to the North. Now, sit/stand in the middle and close your eyes. Breathe deeply for a moment, feeling relaxing energy flowing in with every in-breath and out with every out-breath. When you feel relaxed and focused, open your eyes. Say:

I call upon thee, Spirit of Earth, to support me with your grounding and strength. Light the candle in front of you.

Turn ninety degrees to your right. Say:

I call upon thee, Spirit of Fire, to strengthen my passion and emotion this night (or day). Light the candle you are facing. Turn ninety degrees to your right. Say:

I call upon thee, Spirit of the Wind, to free the path between me and my goal. Light the candle you are facing. Turn ninety degrees to your right. Say:

I call upon thee, Spirit of the Water, to consume my intent to create. Light the candle you are facing. Turn ninety degrees to your right. You should be facing the direction where you began. Say:

Within the balance of nature, I stand! Light one of the white candles and place it in front of you and slightly to the left. Say:

I am one with the power of nature. I am blessed to announce this night, that my intent is to draw my soulmate to me. Light the second white candle and place it in front of you and slightly to the right of the first white candle. Say:

As I will it, I bring into my life the soulmate that I crave, the love that I deserve. I am a powerful creator, and as I will, shall be. Reach out and pick up the two white candles, one in each hand, and raise them in front of you to eye-level. Say:

Two lights in an endless world, united at last by love and by passion. Tilt the two candles to combine their flames into one. Say:

As we come together as one, I bring my wish to pass. So mote it be! Blow out the combined flame of the white candles. Say:

I release this intent into the universe. My creation has begun, and I eagerly await my love. Turn ninety degrees to your left. Say:

Water I command thee! Carry my intent to the ends of the earth! Blow out the candle in front of you. Turn ninety degrees to the left. Say:

Wind I command thee! Carry my intent to the ends of the universe! Blow out the candle in front of you. Turn ninety degrees to the left. Say:

Fire I command thee! Empower my intent and bring haste to the process! Blow out the candle in front of you. Turn ninety degrees to the left. Say:

Earth I command thee! Bring my love to me! Blow out the candle in front of you.

Note: if you don’t feel comfortable commanding the elements you can say for example “Fire I ask of thee!”

Sit/Stand back in the center of your circle. Close your eyes. Breathe deeply for a moment, feeling the energy that you have generated coarsing through your being. Slowly, let the feeling fade back out. When you feel grounded and relaxed once more, open your eyes. Give thanks to the spirits who assist you, and resume your daily life.

All About Sigils

I’m sure I’ve mentioned sigils, in previous posts offhandedly, but we’ve never actually dedicated a post to them, explaining what they are and how you can use them.

What are sigils?

Sigils are symbols that you empower with your intent to bring about change in your life. For example in the fall I was desperately looking for a job. I had interview after interview and other than casual work I was getting nowhere. I thought maybe I would look up a sigil online to help me get a job before going to this one interview. The place I did the interview for while I had the sigil on my arm actually hired me.

How do you come up with a sigil?

I personally get them from the internet honestly. I’m not an overly creative person so making my own I find it hard. I do however know some methods on how to create them yourself.

So before you create your sigil you want to have your intention already predetermined. You want to create a sentence for your intention. For example: I got the job. After you do that you want to get rid of all the vowels in that sentence. For example: g t t h j b. Then you want to get rid of any duplicate letters. For example: g t h j b (notice I removed a t). Then you take all these letters and mush them together to make a sigil. This is the only method I have tried. It didn’t go great for me but if structure is more your thing then this might work great for you. Another method you could try is to meditate while focusing on your intention. You may find that you see a sigil in your mind. If not maybe you could try doodling after your meditation and see if anything feels right for your sigil. You can really go about the process any way that makes you happy and that feels right to you.

How to use a sigil?

There are two thought process when it comes to the first step of the sigil. The first one is that before you can use a sigil you must forget the intention sentence you used to create it before you can use it. The other thought process is that you don’t have to. Some people believe you need to forget it because the point of the sigil is to empower a symbol with your magick that way your sub conscious can’t effect what you’re trying to manifest. So if you still remember what the intention is behind the sigil then you could still be manipulating the magick through your sub conscious. I personally don’t find forgetting necessary.

If you have chosen not to forget then you go straight to the next step. If you choose to forget then you do this as soon as you do forget. You then have to activate your sigil. If you use sacred circles in your practice you can create one around you and your sigil. Even if you’ve used this sigil for something before and now you’re using it for something new, you need to activate it. To activate your sigil you could focus on the sigil while meditating on it’s intention (if you’ve chosen not to go the forgetting route). Let your eyes relax when your are looking at it. Eventually the sigil will start to appear warped. Shortly after this happens the sigil with appear back to normal, this is how you’ll know it is activated. If this doesn’t work for you, you could also burn the sigil, you could charge them with other power sources (sage, the moon, the sun, etc), bake them into food, etc. If an activation method isn’t working for you, don’t worry, just try something else.

You can incorporate them into your craft in many ways. You can use them as a part of another spell, you can use them to protect your home or a loved one, you could use them on your skin to change your mindset, and any other way that you think will benefit you. I created a protection spell bag for my car, to keep everyone safe in it while driving, and I have a sigil on the front of the bag to help power the magick.

Just remember as with all magick, intention is key even if you don’t get the rest right.

Thank you so much for checking out today’s post. Do you use sigils in your practice? Tell me what methods you use to create them down below along with any other thoughts or questions you have. Also, make sure you follow me here and on twitter so you get notifications when I post and upload videos to youtube. Until next time, Blessed Be!

Thyme

shutterstock_206465842_1024x1024

Thyme is an herb that is associated with the water element and the planet venus. The gods/goddesses it is connected to are Freya, Ares, and Aphrodite.

When it is used in spells it is used to increase strength and courage. If you’re working on something that seems unachievable you can use thyme in a spell to keep a positive attitude. If you find your home has a lot of melancholy, hopelessness, or only mellow negative energies you can wash your floors with thyme infused water or burn the thyme to smudge your home. If you find yourself having restless sleeps or nightmares you can put thyme under your pillow. You can wear or burn thyme to bring good health, increase psychic abilities and to make a woman more alluring. You can also take a ritual bath infused with thyme to cleanse any of your sorrows or regrets. Make sure to grow thyme in your garden for good wealth. It is said as thyme grows in your garden so does your wealth. Also, if you enjoy gambling then you want to make sure you have some thyme on you as it is thought to improve luck.

If you enjoy working with faeries you should keep thyme around and grow it in your garden as faeries really like this herb. If you would like to communicate with faeries I recommend you incorporate thyme into a spell.

Thank you for reading today’s post. Make sure you follow me here and on twitter to get notifications when I make posts and upload videos to youtube. Until next time, Blessed Be.

Car Protection Spell

Hello everyone! On the last full moon I decided that I wanted to create a spell bag for my car. I get really bad road anxiety and thought maybe this will help calm my nerves. So below is the spell I made. *disclaimer* I didn’t make up the words however. I found them on pinterest.

Ingredients:

  1. A little cloth or mesh bag
  2. Cinnamon for protection
  3. Ginger to make the spell more powerful
  4. Sage for protection
  5. Salt for protection
  6. Black tourmaline for protection
  7. Clear quartz to boost the spell
  8. Rose Quartz because it is my favourite and brings me peace (sub with your favourite or ignore)
  9. Reiki symbol for protection (if you aren’t trained in reiki feel free to skip this one or put in another sigil)

Image result for sigil for protection

7. Sigil sewn to outside of bag for protection

Steps:

  1. Create a sacred circle using your preferred method (I use sage and my athame)
  2. Call upon your desired gods and goddesses to help you (I called on Hercules and Gaia), air (for safe travels), and fire (to power the spell)
  3. Sew on the sigil
  4. As you fill the bag with your ingredients chant:

On this night, I invoke the powers of fire and air (add names of gods and goddesses if you like) to protect me from all that would harm me, whether physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually.

5. Now you are done creating the bag. Bring the bag to your car and tie it to your rearview window with three knots. (You could also just tie the knots and then put the bag in the glove compartment) As you tie the knots say:

With each knot, I bind this spell

Safety, protection, all is well

Sheltered and shielded, this vehicle shall be

Three times three, SO MOTE IT BE!

I hope you get some use out of my spell. Let me know what you think of it in the comments along with any other thoughts or questions. Make sure you follow me here and on twitter so you get notifications when I post. Don’t forget about my youtube either! I upload a video every Thursday. Until next time Merry Meet and Blessed Be.

Wheel of the Year: Samhain

Hi everyone! Happy Samhain, or Halloween if you will. Samhain is the minor sabbat that occurs between Mabon (fall equinox) and Yule (winter solstice). It falls on October 31st every year. Even though this sabbat is considered to be a minor one it is actually one of the most celebrated sabbats. We are half way to reaching the darkest day of the year since it was last balanced.

Samhain marks the day that the sun god passes on and goes to the underworld. This causes the veil to the spiritual world to be at it’s thinnest. Due to it being so thin spirits can easily travel to and from their realm and ours. This means we can communicate with them much easier. The goddess also transforms to her crone form on this day and spends the next couple months grieving the loss of her partner.

Since the veil is so thin this is a time we use to reconnect with our ancestors. We invite our ancestors to our home by leaving candles (or pictures of these loved ones) in our windows. We also sometimes have a feast of the dead. This is essentially when we set up an extra place at our table and leave a meal for our ancestors. Ways we may contact our loved ones is through divination (tarot cards, pendulums, scrying, etc) or through a Ouija board (not sure if I recommend this one though, at least not for beginners in necromancy).

After Samhain we look forward to Yule which is when the God is born again and spring is on the horizon.

To celebrate this day you can carve pumpkins (used to protect your home from any extra negative energies lurking around), go trick or treating/dress up (Christian’s used to dress up to disguise themselves from demons and monsters), divination (since the veil is thin messages will come through your cards easier and clearer), witchcraft (since the veil in thin there will be an abundance of energy to do you magick with), go for a walk to see how the seasons are changing, and as always do a ritual to honour your deities.

Some gods you can celebrate during this time are: Anubis (Egyptian), Osiris (Egyptian), Yama (Hindu), and Hades (Greek)

Some goddesses you can celebrate during this time are: Morrigan (Celtic), Hel (Norse), Freya (Norse), Demeter (Greek), Hecate (Greek)

Thank you so much for reading! I hope you have a great Samhain. If you’d like to hear about Samhain instead of reading about it make sure you check my youtube channel  tomorrow! Also, make sure you follow me on here and on twitter to make sure you get notifications when I post. Until next time Merry Meet and Blessed Be!

Wheel of the year: Mabon

Hello everyone! Happy Mabon! Mabon is on the fall equinox which is on September 23rd this year. I like to think of it as the equivalent of thanksgiving. This is one of the major sabbats. On this day, light (day) and darkness (night) are equal are everything is gradually becoming more and more dark.

Mabon is symbolic of everything slowly dying. The leaves are turning colour and falling, the harvests are slowly coming to an end, the flowers are going, the bugs and animals are slowly making their way to hibernation. Not only are all these physical changes happening but the god is slowly dying too. He will be gone on Samhain. And the Goddess is changing from the mother aspect to the crone.

To celebrate you can make wine, gathering dried herbs, you can make offerings (ciders, wines, herbs and fertilizer), and you can decorate burial sites of loved ones with acorns, leaves, and pine cones. Now is also the time to have a big family feast with potatoes, carrots, stuffing/dressing, all that good stuff. As always you can go for a nature walk to see what changes are happening around you. It is also encouraged to hold a ritual to honour the deities of this season. You can always do some spellwork and divination at this time too.

Gods that are celebrated during this time are: Thoth, Thor, Hermes, and The Green Man.

Goddesses that are celebrated during this time are: Modron, Morgan, Epona, Persephone, Pamona and the Muses

Thanks for reading! What are you going to do for Mabon? Let me know in the comments as well as any other thoughts or questions you have. Also, don’t forget to follow me on here and on twitter to get notifications when I post. Have a fantastic Mabon! Until next time, Merry Meet and Blessed Be!

Cilantro/Coriander

cilantro-coriander-600x397.jpg

Cilantro and coriander come from the same plant and depending on where you are from are used interchangeably so for the sake of this post I will treat them as the same thing.

Cilantro has many magickal uses, the main one being love. Some of the other uses of it is for clairvoyance, divination, fertility, gain, health, healing, keeping secrets, passion, peace, protection, retention, and weddings.

Cilantro is associated with the planet mars, masculine energy, and the element of fire.

When used in spells it is great for love sachets and spells (remember though love spells have to be worded in a way that manipulates no ones personal will). You can add the powder of the seeds to wine to make a potion of lust (red wine would likely be best for this), you can hang in the home for protection, and you can use it crushed in drinks (like the wine) or in incense if you want to burn it). If you celebrate the great rite this is great to add to an elixir for your celebration. You can also through this instead of rice at a handfasting or add it to the handfasting cake.

If you like to use herbs to help with illness cilantro/coriander is best used for these ailments: digestive complications such as dyspepsia, stomachache, loss of appetite, and flatulence. I personally would brew a tea with cilantro/coriander in it to help relieve these issues.
